Accent checker

How strong is my accent? Check it in 30 seconds.

The accent checker rates how noticeable your accent is and — separately — how clear you are, then shows the sounds that make the difference.

Read this aloud in your normal voice (about 30 seconds):

Last summer, my brother and I took the early train to the coast. We bought three thick sandwiches, a bottle of water and a map, and we walked along the cliffs until the weather turned. By the time the rain arrived, we were laughing in a tiny cafe, drying our socks by the heater.

01 — The short answer
In short

AccentLoop’s accent checker gives you two separate scores from a 30-second reading: accent strength (how noticeable your accent is) and clarity (how easy you are to understand). Strength is not a grade — many very clear speakers have strong accents. The checker also names the accents you sound closest to and the sounds you could practise.

How to check your accent

  1. Press “Start the accent test” and allow the microphone. Nothing is recorded before you press it.
  2. Read the short passage on screen out loud at your normal pace — about 30 seconds.
  3. Press stop. In about 6 seconds you see the accents you sound closest to, with percentages.
  4. Check the US–UK scale, accent strength and the 2–3 sounds that gave your accent away.
  5. Share your result card or practise the exact sounds it found.

Strength vs clarity

Research on second-language speech has long found that accent strength and intelligibility are related but not the same: listeners often understand a strongly accented speaker perfectly. That is why we score them separately. If you are preparing for interviews or calls, clarity is usually the one that matters.

StrengthWhat it means
0–20Barely noticeable to a general listener
20–50Noticeable, rarely affects understanding
50–80Clearly noticeable; a few sounds may cause confusion
80–100Very strong; listeners may need to adjust

Lowering a score (if you want to)

Pick the one sound the checker lists first and drill it for a week — 5 minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Our pronunciation checker has 10 drill sentences, each built around one tricky sound pair, and marks each word green or red.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good accent strength score?

There isn’t a good or bad score. Strength only says how noticeable your accent is. Clarity is the score that tells you whether people understand you easily.

Is the accent test free?

Yes. The accent test is free with no account and no email. To stop abuse there is a soft limit of a few tests per day per connection.

Do you keep my recording?

No. The audio is analysed and then discarded — it is never stored. We keep the text result for 30 days so your share link works, and you can delete it any time from your account page. We never create a voiceprint.

How accurate is it?

Before launch we tested it on 10 synthetic voices in different native English accents and it named the right region 9 times out of 10; on the 14 sample voices on this site its first guess matched 13 of 14. Real voices, especially mixed and second-language accents, are harder, so treat the result as “closest to”, not a label. It is for entertainment and practice, not a professional assessment.

Is having an accent bad?

No. Everyone has an accent. The test only tells you which accents you sound closest to and which sounds create that impression, so you can decide what — if anything — you want to change.
