Guess my accent

Guess my accent Can AI tell where you’re from?

Read the passage and the AI guesses your accent. Then send the link and see whether your friends sound more American, more British — or can fool it.

Read this aloud in your normal voice (about 30 seconds):

Last summer, my brother and I took the early train to the coast. We bought three thick sandwiches, a bottle of water and a map, and we walked along the cliffs until the weather turned. By the time the rain arrived, we were laughing in a tiny cafe, drying our socks by the heater.

01 — The short answer
In short

Read a 54-word passage aloud and the AI guesses your accent in about 6 seconds: its top three guesses with percentages, where you sit between American and British, and the sounds that gave you away. Share the result card and challenge friends to take the same test. Free, no sign-up, audio not stored.

How to get the AI to guess your accent

  1. Press “Start the accent test” and allow the microphone. Nothing is recorded before you press it.
  2. Read the short passage on screen out loud at your normal pace — about 30 seconds.
  3. Press stop. In about 6 seconds you see the accents you sound closest to, with percentages.
  4. Check the US–UK scale, accent strength and the 2–3 sounds that gave your accent away.
  5. Share your result card or practise the exact sounds it found.

The friend challenge

  1. Take the test and share your card — it shows your top accent and percentage, never your recording or transcript.
  2. Friends take the same 30-second test from your link.
  3. Compare: who is most American on the US–UK scale? Whose accent is lightest?
  4. Round two: everyone reads in a fake accent. The best fake wins.

Can you fool it?

Putting on an accent moves the result more than people expect. The features that move it most:

  • Drop or add the r after vowels (“summer”, “water”) — the biggest single swing between American and British.
  • Say t in “water” and “bottle” as a quick d for American, or a crisp t for British.
  • Use a long “ah” in “laughing” and “last” for British or Australian.

If the AI still recognises your real accent, it’s usually rhythm and vowel shapes that give you away — they are much harder to fake.

Try the listening quiz too

Think you can guess accents better than the AI? The accent quiz plays 10 voices reading the same passage — pick the accent and see your score.

On the 14 sample voices on this site (synthetic voices, each reading our passage in a different accent) the test’s first guess matched the intended accent 13 times out of 14. The Latin American Spanish sample came out as Spanish (Spain) 55%, Latin American 30%.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI guess my accent?

Yes. Read the passage for about 30 seconds and it guesses the three accents you sound closest to with percentages. Clear accents are usually guessed well; mixed accents get split results.

Does the share card include my voice?

No. The card shows only the accent names and percentages. Audio is never stored, and the transcript is not on the card.

Is the accent test free?

Yes. The accent test is free with no account and no email. To stop abuse there is a soft limit of a few tests per day per connection.

Do you keep my recording?

No. The audio is analysed and then discarded — it is never stored. We keep the text result for 30 days so your share link works, and you can delete it any time from your account page. We never create a voiceprint.

How accurate is it?

Before launch we tested it on 10 synthetic voices in different native English accents and it named the right region 9 times out of 10; on the 14 sample voices on this site its first guess matched 13 of 14. Real voices, especially mixed and second-language accents, are harder, so treat the result as “closest to”, not a label. It is for entertainment and practice, not a professional assessment.

Is having an accent bad?

No. Everyone has an accent. The test only tells you which accents you sound closest to and which sounds create that impression, so you can decide what — if anything — you want to change.
