American accent training

American accent training, with feedback on every word.

Train the few sounds that make English sound American — r, the flap t, the short a and the open o — and hear exactly which words still slip.

The red lorry rolled along the rural road.

01 — The short answer
In short

American accent training means practising the handful of features that make General American recognisable: a pronounced r after vowels, the quick d-like t in “water”, the short a in “can’t”, the open “ah” in “hot” and stress-timed rhythm. Train one feature a week for 5–10 minutes a day, record yourself, and check each word with instant feedback.

How to train an American accent in 10 minutes a day

  1. Take the 30-second accent test to see where you sit on the US–UK scale and which American features you already use.
  2. Pick this week’s feature from the plan below (week 1 is the American r).
  3. Listen to the model sentence, then say it slowly three times, exaggerating the feature.
  4. Check the sentence in the pronunciation checker and redo any word marked red.
  5. Say the same sentence at normal speed, then once in your own words.
  6. Retest your accent at the end of each week and watch the US–UK scale move.

The 6 features that make English sound American

Accent coaches agree on a short list. You don’t need all of them at once; the first two change how American you sound more than everything else combined.

FeatureExample wordsWhat to doCommon slip
1. r after vowels (rhotic r)car, summer, word, firstCurl the tongue back and keep the r sound to the endDropping the r: “caa”, “summa”
2. Flap twater, better, city, a lot ofBetween vowels, tap the tongue once — it sounds like a quick dA full, clear t: “wa-ter”
3. Short a (TRAP–BATH)can’t, laugh, after, classUse the same vowel as in “cat”A long “ah” (British) or “e” (bed)
4. Open o (LOT)hot, stop, job, coffeeOpen the jaw, lips unrounded — close to “ah”A rounded “o”

A 4-week American accent training plan

Ten minutes a day is enough. Keep the same order every day: listen, say slowly, check, say at speed, use it in your own sentence.

WeekFocusDaily drill sentenceDone when
1American rThe red car turned the corner first.Every r is marked green twice in a row
2Flap t + dark lPut a little water in the bottle.“water”, “little” and “bottle” sound like “wadder”, “liddle”, “boddle”
3Short a and open oI can’t stop laughing at the hot dog.“can’t” rhymes with “ant”; “hot” sounds like “haht”
4Rhythm and reductionsI’m going to get a cup of coffee. You can say it as “I’m gonna get a cuppa coffee” without losing clarity

Retest your accent at the end of each week. Most learners see the biggest jump on the US–UK scale after weeks 1 and 2.

What to do on busy days

Say the daily sentence once and check it. One focused minute keeps the habit; skipping a day doesn’t undo progress.

Common mistakes in American accent training

  • Training everything at once — pick one feature a week, or nothing sticks.
  • Overdoing the r — it should be smooth, not a growl. Listen to the model and match its length.
  • Flapping every t — only between vowels (“water”) and in fast phrases (“a lot of”). Keep the t clear at the start of stressed syllables (“today”, “attack”).
  • Only practising single words — the accent lives in phrases, so always finish with a full sentence.
  • Never checking — without feedback it is easy to repeat the same slip a hundred times.

Why train with instant feedback

Books, podcasts and video courses explain the sounds well, but you have to judge your own voice by ear — which is exactly what is hard when an accent is your own. The pronunciation checker marks each word green or red and shows what it heard instead (for example “water” heard as “waiter”), so you know which word to redo. 10 checks a day are free without an account.

On the 14 sample voices on this site (synthetic voices, each reading our passage in a different accent) the test’s first guess matched the intended accent 13 times out of 14. The Latin American Spanish sample came out as Spanish (Spain) 55%, Latin American 30%.

Frequently asked questions

How long does American accent training take?

Most people hear a clear difference in their r and t within 2–4 weeks of 10 minutes a day. Sounding fully native takes much longer and isn’t needed to be easy to understand.

Can I learn an American accent for free?

Yes. The accent test, the drills and 10 pronunciation checks a day are free, with no account. Pro ($9.99/mo) raises the limit to 60 checks a day.

What is the hardest part of an American accent?

For most learners it is the r after vowels and the flap t, because many languages have neither. They are also the two features that make the biggest difference.

Should I learn American or British pronunciation?

Either is fine — choose the one you hear most at work or in media. Consistency matters more than the choice. Our test shows which one you are closer to already.

How do I practise an American accent alone?

Use short sentences packed with one feature, record yourself, and check each word. Shadow American speakers for a minute a day: play a sentence, pause, and copy the rhythm.

Is the accent test free?

Yes. The accent test is free with no account and no email. To stop abuse there is a soft limit of a few tests per day per connection.

Do you keep my recording?

No. The audio is analysed and then discarded — it is never stored. We keep the text result for 30 days so your share link works, and you can delete it any time from your account page. We never create a voiceprint.

How accurate is it?

Before launch we tested it on 10 synthetic voices in different native English accents and it named the right region 9 times out of 10; on the 14 sample voices on this site its first guess matched 13 of 14. Real voices, especially mixed and second-language accents, are harder, so treat the result as “closest to”, not a label. It is for entertainment and practice, not a professional assessment.

Is having an accent bad?

No. Everyone has an accent. The test only tells you which accents you sound closest to and which sounds create that impression, so you can decide what — if anything — you want to change.
