- Stress content words: 'we REDUCED latency by FORTY percent'.
Sample answer
How do you approach debugging a production issue you've never seen before?
First I limit the damage — roll back or switch off the feature flag if users are affected. Then I gather facts: when it started, what changed, and which users see it. In one incident, checkout errors jumped right after a deploy. The logs pointed to a timeout in a payment call, so we rolled back, reproduced it in staging and found a missing database index. We added the index, wrote a regression test and shared a short write-up with the team.
A model answer for practice — tell your own true story, in your own words.

Frequently asked questions
What are common software engineer interview questions?
Walk me through a project you're proud of. What was your part? Tell me about a time you disagreed with a technical decision. How do you approach debugging a production issue you've never seen before?
Can I practise for free?
Yes — one 3-question interview a day, no sign-up. The 7-day Interview Sprint ($9.90 once, no renewal) unlocks full interviews.
Should I memorise my answers?
No. Memorise the stories (situation, what you did, the result) and practise telling them out loud in different words. That sounds natural and survives follow-up questions.
